Defence Against Weapons

Here is just one idea of how to defend against a knife thrust to the body. It comes from Filipino Martial Arts, and is called Kalasag, which means shield. This is a simplified broken down version of the idea, more a concept of what to do. There are many many ways to train and develop this. When practised a lot it can become highly effective. The simple idea of “shielding” with the back of the forearms is the major “take-away”. Disarming and everything else requires lots of practise. Remember though… best defence is RUN!!!

Two options of how to defend against an “ice pick” grip attack. It’s important to know both, because in the heat of the battle you can’t dictate what angle the attack comes at. If it’s a more vertical kind of attack you will likely need the second variation. These techniques need to be trained extensively until you feel where the weapon goes and can respond appropriately without thinking. Always remember that the first option is to RUN!!! But if you’re going to go in.. go in hard and fast and be sure to add that strike as you enter.

This is a simple “proactive” technique to be used when you see someone reaching for a weapon. Weapons are usually concealed in the waistband or the pocket. I was taught this against a pistol, but it also applies to a knife “draw”. Avoidance and de-escalation is always the best option in situations like this. However, if you cannot do those, and cannot get away you need to take action. During a verbal altercation if you see anyone reaching in their pockets or round their back, I suggest you take action. You MAY have got it wrong, but I personally believe it’s better to be safe than sorry.
